If you’ve ever picked up a bottle that says “all-natural” or “eco-friendly” and thought you were making a healthy choice, only to find out it was full of questionable ingredients... you’re not alone. It’s called greenwashing, and unfortunately, it’s everywhere these days.
Let’s talk about what greenwashing really is, how to spot it, and what you can do to make sure you’re not being misled. As someone who cares deeply about what goes in, on, and around my body and my children and grandchildren, I want you to feel confident and empowered when it comes to the products in your home.
What Is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is when a company markets a product as natural, clean, non-toxic, or eco-friendly when it really isn’t. They use “green” language, images of plants, or vague claims to make you think you’re buying something safe and healthy, even when it contains harmful chemicals or synthetic ingredients.
Unfortunately, it’s a marketing trick and it works.
Many people end up unknowingly using products that don’t align with their values simply because the label looked clean.
Why It Matters
Our skin is our largest organ and what we breathe, touch, and apply to our bodies matters. Those “harmless” ingredients can build up over time, disrupting hormones, irritating skin, and even affecting long-term health.
As moms, grandmas, and caretakers, we want better for our families. That’s why it’s so important to see past the labels and know what’s really inside the bottle.
How to Spot Greenwashing
Here are a few red flags to watch for:
- Vague buzzwords like “natural,” “green,” “botanical,” or “plant-based” with no clear ingredient list or transparency
- No third-party certifications like USDA Organic or Non-GMO
- Ingredients that don’t match the claims, such as artificial fragrances, parabens, or sulfates hidden under misleading names
- Green packaging and nature imagery without substance to back it up
- “Fragrance” listed as an ingredient—this word alone can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals
So, What Can You Do?
- Read labels and if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, look it up
- Research brands and don’t be afraid to dig into their sourcing and manufacturing practices
- Use trusted resources like the EWG’s Skin Deep database to check product safety
- Follow your gut if something feels “off,” it probably is
