I used to enjoy burning candles, it was one of my favorite ways to relax and freshen our home. But once I learned what was actually inside most candles, I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
Many of the candles on store shelves are filled with synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals that release toxins into the air we breathe. And considering how much time we spend indoors, that matters more than we think.
Today, I want to share what I’ve learned and what I use now instead that not only smells wonderful, but supports my family’s wellness too.
The Hidden Dangers of Candles
Not all candles are created equal. In fact, many popular brands use:
- Paraffin wax – a petroleum byproduct that releases toxic compounds like benzene and toluene when burned
- Synthetic fragrance – a catch-all term that can include hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are hormone disruptors or allergens
- Lead or metal-core wicks – while less common today, they can still be found and may release heavy metals into your air
- Formaldehyde and other VOCs – volatile organic compounds are released as candles burn and can irritate the lungs, eyes, and skin
What’s worse?
These toxins don’t just go away when you blow out the flame. They linger in your home’s air and your body long after the candle’s out.
What We Breathe In Matters
Experts have found that indoor air quality can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air—due to what we bring inside. Candles, air fresheners, plug-ins, and even cleaning products can all contribute.
This was a wake-up call for me. I didn’t want the things I used to make my home feel cozy to quietly harm my health—or my family’s.
What I Use Instead: Essential Oil Diffusing
Years ago, I snagged a Young Living Starter Kit and discovered a whole new way to make my home smell wonderful, without compromising our health.
Diffusing essential oils releases tiny, beneficial molecules into the air that not only smell good, but also support the body, mind, and mood. Instead of synthetic fragrance, we get the real deal—pure plant-based oils that work with the body, not against it.
Some benefits of diffusing essential oils:
- Freshens and purifies the air
- Supports respiratory health
- Promotes relaxation, focus, or energy—depending on the oils you choose
- Safe for kids and pets (with proper use!)
And the best part? One diffuser can scent your entire living space for hours, with no soot, no flame, and no toxins.
If You Must Burn a Candle…
I get it. Sometimes there’s something nostalgic and peaceful about a candle. If you choose to light one occasionally, here are a few tips:
- Choose beeswax or soy candles with 100% cotton wicks
- Look for fragrance-free or those scented only with essential oils
- Avoid candles with dyes or vague ingredient lists
- Ventilate your space while burning and keep it to short periods
Ready to Try Diffusing?
If you’ve never tried diffusing essential oils before, you’re in for a treat.
There are several starter bundles to choose from but the one I recommend most is the Premium Starter Bundle. It includes a high-quality diffuser and a carefully curated set of popular oils, so you can start experiencing the benefits right away.
There’s truly something for everyone... from calming lavender and energizing citrus to immune-supportive blends and cozy seasonal scents.
Making the switch from candles to essential oils was one of the simplest, most powerful choices I made for my home. It gave me peace of mind knowing I was supporting our wellness, not unknowingly compromising it.
If you have questions or want help getting started, I’m always here to help. You deserve a home that smells amazing and feels even better.
Let’s clean up your air—one drop at a time.
